Is Middle Road Bridge Revamp Impacting Your Day?

Do you think repair work is taking too long?

Repair and renovation work is not only slowing down travel between Bayport and Sayville on Middle Road, it's apparently irking some local residents who wonder how long it's going to continue.

A Patch reader posted the following on the community board:

Brian's Bridge or the new Tappan Zee Bridge? Which will be finished first?

Am I the only person who travels across Brian's Bridge on Middle Road who is wondering whats going on? The construction began several months ago with utility work. Then they closed the north lane and put up the traffic lights. The work does not seem to be progressing. I am not a bridge builder, and am not being critical, but is their an estimated time of completion? What exactly are they doing? What was wrong with the old bridge? Will the new bridge be a drawbridge? Will their be a safer section for crabbers and fishermen? How about a tunnel...or chunnel? Will there be a toll? Did the town hire a firm that has experience in this type of work? I just want my ole bridge back!!

Patch wants to know what you think of the repair effort and if you're worried it's taking too long.

As Patch reported in September, the bridge was initially built in 1937, according to Suffolk County, and is  being replaced because as it has exceeded it’s useful life given it has a limited capacity of 20 tons.

Patch has reached out to Suffolk County officials regarding the ongoing project to get answers on the reader's questions posed and will update as soon as that information is provided.
