Bayport Residents Surf the Surge
The damaging storm surge did not stop Bayport residents from partaking in some water fun.
Hurricane Irene's storm surge left many homes along the bay flooded and damaged, but that didn't stop Bayport residents from taking to the water.
With heavy wind gusts and a strong tide, residents waded in the Great South Bay extension formerly known as Bayport Beach. Irene's storm surge broke up the wood bulkhead and boardwalk, causing William Street and Paulanna and Gerritsen Avenues to severely flood. However, this didn't keep a pair of men from surfing the bay! The mushy conditions made for impractical surf, but they braved the waves. At the same time, a group of other young hopped on a tube and rode it down the street.
A family of kayakers also explored the flooded grounds of Bayport Beach as others walked around marveling at the destruction of a local landmark.
