B-BP's Piekos Named Top Pitcher in Suffolk County

Junior lefty is recipient of Gibson Award.

One can only imagine what Jack Piekos will accomplish in his senior year as a varsity baseball player for Bayport-Blue Point High School given he is this year’s Suffolk County Pitcher of the Year and recipient of the Gibson Award.

The junior’s pitching performances led his squad to a 27-0 season and state championship in a season in which two Suffolk County ballplayers were drafted into the major leagues.

“For him to win this award in a year when two pitchers from Suffolk County were drafted in the Major League Baseball Draft is truly remarkable and evidence of how dominant he was throughout the season,” Coach Jim Moccio told Patch.

Here’s just a snippet of the left hander's stats this season: he broke the school record for wins, hitting 11, as well as strikeouts, with 111 total. His ERA was 0.38. In post-season play he went 4-0, with an ERA of 0.25 with a no-hitter in beating Rocky Point and a one-hitter defeating Sayville and three shutouts.

“The prestigious honor that was bestowed upon Jack was certainly well deserved. Jack’s pitching performance this past season was unmatched,” said B-BP Athletic Director Tim Mullins.

“Not only did he deliver from a pitching standpoint but he was just as impressive from an offensive standpoint,” he said, noting that Piekos is just as accomplished off the mound.

“To win this award as a junior is nothing short of exceptional. Not only does is he a gifted athlete but he is just as impressive in the classroom and is one of the most respectful student athletes you will ever come in contact with," said Mullins.

"We are very pleased that Jack is only a junior and we have another year to see him flourish in his baseball career.”
