B-BP Boys Track & Field Sweep League, County Titles

The Bayport-Blue Point Boys Track & Field team had another outstanding season this year, going undefeated for a fourth straight season, winning the league and county championships.

On Tuesday, May 21 the team competed in the Division III championships.  The Phantoms won their second straight division championship scoring 172 points beating the field by a margin of over 80 points.

Coach Zafonte stated, “We had athletes in the finals of practically every event.  Our kids really rose to the occasion earning the best times and marks of their careers. Everyone on the team had a role in this win.”

Senior Adam LaFemina, who recently came back from having pneumonia, ran a gutsy race placing second in the 3200 meter run.  Throwers Beau Kraft, Dan Percival, and Rob Rodriguez swept the shot put placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, respectively. Beau also placed 2nd in the disc with a huge throw on his last attempt.

Chris Stelling, feeling flu like symptoms, competed in the 5 event grueling pentathlon and finished in 1st place.

Jared Gray finished 2nd in the 400 meter run and then came back in less than 15 minutes to take 2nd in the 200 meter run.

Rob “Bob-o” Vetri finished 2nd in the demanding 3000 meter steeplechase. Dario Magnoli finished 3rd in the pole vault and 4th in the 110 meter high hurdles.

Bailey Imbo placed 3rd in the 800 meter run, 2nd in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles, and 2nd in the 4x400 meter and 4x800 meter relays. Bailey’s events were close giving him little to no rest between each, but he kept his composure and trusted his training to score in every event he was entered.

Bailey stated, “This is what we train for everyday in practice.”

Harry Martin placed 2nd in the 800 meter run, 2nd in the 100 meter run, and he was a key leg on both the 2nd place 4x400 meter and the 2nd place 4x800 meter relays.

Like Bailey, there were times Harry had very little rest before his next event. Harry stated, “It was very important for us to defend our title and we trained accordingly.”

Jack Flood had an amazing day placing 1st in the 110 meter high hurdles, 1st in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles, 3rd in the high jump, and he was a key leg on the 2nd place 4x400 meter relay team.

In the past four years, the Phantoms have won 4 league championships and 3 division championships.

The Phantoms 4x400 meter relay is looking to defend their 2012 New York State Division II Championship.  In addition, Jack Flood is currently ranked #1 in the Federation in the pentathlon.
