DiCocco, who will continue her volleyball career at Queens College, noted, “I’m really going to miss my coach and my teammates, but hopefully I will have a similar playing experience in college.” Fairfield University in Connecticut will be …

Voters elected three newcomers and removed two incumbents in this week's vote.
Is electing three brand-new board of education members to a board, which is the case in Bayport-Blue Point, a good sign or a bad sign or any sign of voter sentiment? Is losing three tenured board members in one year (two were defeated and one has chosen not to run) a good thing or a bad thing? Patch wants your thoughts on the voter decisions made regarding B-BP's board of education this week. Vote in our poll and comment below. We'll compile results next week.

West Islip is the top seed for boys; Ward Melville is No. 1 girls team.
Lacrosse is a Long Island state of mind, and nothing showcased that more than the state playoffs a year ago. Three Long Island boys squads played in state title games, which ended with Farmingdale hoisting its first Class A plaque. It could have easily been West Islip instead. The teams played a thrilling Long Island championship game decided in overtime. West Islip, after all, has worn four of the last six state crowns. Perennial girls lacrosse power Northport finally broke through and won its first state Class A championship. In fact, Long Island girls teams have won nine of 10 possible state class titles (A, B, C) since 2009. But the first step is winning Suffolk, which begins with boys and girls lacrosse playoff games this week. The …

Today's got sunshine, baseball and a chance to help out a worthy cause.
Off today? Or thinking of cutting out early or just want to get the kids out in the sun? Get down to the Bayport-Blue Point baseball field as the Phantoms take on Mount Sinai, at the high school, at 3:15 pm and celebrate the team’s Senior Day and also buy a t-shirt that supports breast cancer research. It’s a great day to watch a ballgame, get some sun and do something good.

New local vet hospital to open soon and Visual Arts Showcase happening this weekend.
It looks like the new animal hospital and care center is nearly ready to open its doors on Montauk Highway in Sayville. There also seems to be a new ‘pet animal clinic’ at the corner of Gillette Avenue and Montauk in Bayport these days. Does that mean more people have more pets these days or are just taking better care of pets one has to wonder. The recent newsletter of the Sayville Chamber of Commerce was jammed packed with great news. According to the newsletter Sayville Running Company store co-owner Brendan Barrett finished in the top 13 of this past week's LI Marathon. The Long Island Maritime Museum sent Patch an update this week on the annual ‘Pirate Festive Aaarghhhives’ slated to be held June 16 and 17. Let Patch save you time. …

The squad is currently 6-0 in League VII.
The Bayport-Blue Point girls track team is now the undefeated League VII champions after beating Wyandanch on Wednesday. The girls are currently 6-0 and last week defeated rival Shoreham-Wading River 84-66. Entering the season, the team had just come off a league championship in the winter season and a third-place finish in the Small School Championship meet. This year’s league championship is the Girls XC/Track & Field Program's sixth straight league championship dating back to cross country 2010. As of this week, the girls team is one of the best small school teams in NY State. Jordan Collins currently ranks first in the discus and second in the shot put in the state along with Bailey Walker being ranked first in the 400 meter …

School districts have varied rules but what rules would you put in place?
A group of Lindenhurst high school students were caught drinking on a bus as they returned home from an athletic competition. They each received a three-day suspension from school, a four-day suspension from practice and not allowed to participate in one game. Is that enough? Too little? What do you think is fair?

Bayport elementary students fundraiser in March was a huge success.
On April 3, over 400 students grades K through 5 from Sylvan Avenue Elementary School attended an assembly in which members of “It Starts With Sylvan” presented a check in the amount of $1,000 to Alzheimer’s Association Long Island. The money was raised during the month of March and went toward the 2012 Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which will take place September 8 at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Students helped raise money by purchasing AALI awareness ribbons for a donation. In addition, peer leaders sold Alzheimer’s awareness pens, shoelaces, backpack tags and bracelets to students at the school’s “Awareness Shop” and sold paper forget-me-nots to grow the school’s “Memory Garden.” They also wrote letters to their “Grandpals” who reside …
The Sayville haven for all things surfing and skate boarding took top honors.
On Monday of this week Patch asked local residents to give it up when it comes to their favorite, bestest sporting goods place. We listed out several in the local communities Patch covers and the resounding winner is Bunger's Surf Shop on Main Street in Sayville with 53 percent of the vote tally. Modells Sporting Goods and Lacrosse Unlimited both garnered 20 percent of the votes, Sports Authority received 6 percent. Yes that only adds up to 99 percent, but as we note the Patch poll is not a scientific poll. Next week, starting Monday, the big question is which is best the Chinese food place. Thanks for voting for your favorites.
