Memorial Service Today for B-BP Teacher Doug Monsell

Beloved educator will be buried at St. Ann's Cemetery following chapel service.

A chapel service for Bayport-Blue Point teacher Doug Monsell will be held today, Saturday, at 12:30 p.m. at Raynor & D'Andrea Funeral Home at 245 Montauk Highway, in West  Sayville. interment following at St. Ann's Cemetery in Sayville. Monsell, a business teacher and high school golf coach, was a well-liked educator who lost his fight against liver disease on Wednesday morning.

B-BP Students Prove Small Change Can Make a Big Difference

Academy Street Elementary students help raise funds for a worthy cause.

Students of Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District recently attended an assembly in which a check in the amount of $283 was presented to Patricia Conway, a representative for the Friends of Karen charity. The check reflected the amount of money collected by the students during the Small Change Drive held over the course of a month. This is the sixth year that the Peer Leaders group of Academy Street has invited students to participate in the Small Change program, and in that period of time, students have collected over $3,500 for Friends of Karen. The charity is dedicated to providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Friends of …

Lincoln Avenue kindergarten students trade ideas and display amazing ingenuity during a Recycle Fair.

Accepting the challenge of reducing, reusing, and recycling while commemorating Earth Day, Lincoln Avenue kindergarten students recently traded ideas and displayed amazing ingenuity during a Recycle Fair. “The children were asked to reuse things around the house like cans, wood, bottles, paper towel tubes, etc., to create a new item,” explained teacher Gina LoCurto. After finding unique ways to repurpose recyclables, the students showcased great creativity by making various kinds of instruments, flower pots/boxes, and even a game of bowling. “There were some pretty cool projects,” said Megan Dailey, who was one of Mrs. Gonzalez’s Kindergarten students. “My favorite was Alexia’s. Bayport-Blue Point Student-Athletes Sign Letters of Intent

High school seniors are excited to embark on college sports journey.

Congratulations to Bayport-Blue Point High School senior athletes Jordan Collins (track), Arielle DiCocco (volleyball), Rachel O’Brien (lacrosse) and Robert Popdan (lacrosse) on signing letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Collins, who holds every throwing event school record at Bayport-Blue Point High School, will continue to compete at St. Francis University in Pennsylvania. “I am really looking forward to competing as part of a Division I team,” he stated. DiCocco, who will continue her volleyball career at Queens College, noted, “I’m really going to miss my coach and my teammates, but hopefully I will have a similar playing experience in college.” Fairfield University in Connecticut will be …

B-BP BOE Victors: Election Proves Community Wants Change

As three incumbents depart come June, the three newcomers believe change is needed.

Bayport-Blue Point taxpayers are bringing big change to the board of education come July having voted out two longtime incumbents and electing three new members on Tuesday. Newcomers Rebecca Campbell, John Lynch and Bill Milligan, a trio who ran on a quasi-slate strategy, beat out BOE Vice President Andrea O’Neill and trustee Jane Burgess in one of the biggest election upsets in years. The number of tenured board members leaving once terms expire in June is three, as Kathy Heinlein chose not to seek re-election this year. That leaves four incumbents, two of which have double-digit tenure: Board President Jim March and 12-year trustee Lenny Camarda. Sayville School Chief: Budget Approval Reflects Voters' Satisfaction

Superintendent attributes district's ability to maintain programs while meeting state tax levy cap as reason for success.

The resounding approval Tuesday of Sayville School District’s 2012-2013 $85,674,961 budget, and the re-election of board president Ray Nelson, reflects voters’ satisfaction with district fiscal decisions and student programs, according to the top school leader. “The re-election of Ray [Nelson, BOE president] is part of the whole package that people are satisfied and happy with the programs and the responsible fiscal approach,” said School Superintendent Dr. Walter Schartner. The budget passed by a whopping margin, with 1,842 yes votes to 684 nay votes. “Many districts were faced with trying to either stay under the 2 percent tax levy cap or maintain programs and we did both,” said Schartner. B-BP Business Teacher Loses Battle Against Liver Disease

Bayport-Blue Point business teacher Doug Monsell lost a valiant battle against liver disease Wednesday morning. The well-liked 47-year-old educator is being remembered by school leaders and friends as an enthusiastic teacher who truly enjoyed his work and helping his students achieve, and as a good man and father. He was a graduate of Bayport-Blue Point schools. He was an avid sports fan of the Mets, Jets and Rangers and often worked security for district football and basketball games. Monsell was diagnosed two months ago and was being treated at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He had been awaiting an organ transplant but went into organ failure on Tuesday. Sayville Voters OK All 3 Budgets, Busing Plan & Re-Elect Board Incumbent

Sayville taxpayers approved a proposed district spend plan, the library budget proposal and the budget for the Sayville Historical Society Tuesday. Current Board of Education President Ray Nelson was returned for another term, beating challenger Laura Valente by a vote of 1,329 to 973. In the library board race Joseph Loughren beat Nandini Charles by a tally of 1,117 to 487. A proposition to expand busing on the elementary level, which added no cost to the budget, was approved by a vote of 1,865 to 540. The Sayville Historical Society budget was approved by a vote of 1,810 to 601. The Sayville Library spend plan was approved by a vote of 1,722 to 735. In a resounding turnout district taxpayers okay spend plan and put three newcomers on board.

Bayport-Blue Point voters hit the polls heavy Tuesday, approving the proposed budget by a vote of 1,773 to 808. Incumbent Board of Education members Jane Burgess and Andrea O'Neill were defeated by newcomers Bill Milligan and Rebecca Campbell, respectively. Challenger John Lynch beat out challenger Michael Miller.
