Police: Woman Struck by Car in Sayville in Critical Condition

Accident took place Friday night in front of the Attias Flea Market.

A woman is in critical condition after being hit by a car in front of the Attias Flea Market in Sayville Friday night, police said.  The accident occurred at 8:39 p.m. at the intersection of the eastbound Sunrise Highway service road and Broadway Avenue when Bonnie Gallagher, of Centereach, who was driving a 2001 Chevy, struck 62-year-old Shamim Bezum.  Bezum suffered head trauma and fractures to her pelvis and arm. She was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue in critical condition. Gallagher was not injured in the crash, police said.  Police are asking anyone with information on the crash to call Fifth Squad detectives at 631-854-8552.

Bayport Resident Among Fallen Cops to be Honored

Suffolk Police Officer Glen Ciano is among nearly two dozen fallen officers to be remembered.

Suffolk Police will hold a special ceremony Friday to honor 22 cops who in the line of duty, including former Bayport resident Glen Ciano. Ciano was killed on February 22, 2009 while responding to an aid call from a fellow officer when his patrol car was hit by convicted drunk driver Jose Borbon. Ciano's car careened into a utility pole and exploded into flames on Vanderbilt Motor Parkway near Commack Road in Commack. Borbon spent two years and eight months in prison before he was released in October, 2011. The memorial service to honor the officers will be held at 10:30 at police headquarters in Yaphank.

Schettino Family Asks Court for Help in Answers About Son’s Death

Blue Point family of teen killed on LIE seeks update on investigation.

All Jo Ann Schettino wants these days are answers. Answers about what happened when her 18-year-old son, Billy, was killed on March 14, and why it happened. “It’s been two months and we know nothing still,” said the Blue Point resident. The family has hired an attorney, Theodore Rosenberg, of Rosenberg and Gluck in Holtsville, and was granted a conference with a county court judge Tuesday. The family is asking for the court's help in getting a status report on the investigation, a copy of the medical examiner and autopsy reports and the personal effects from Billy Schettino’s car which remains impounded. “We had been told in a letter from the district attorney’s office that they can’t release any of what we want due to the investigation,” …

Vandal Defaces Blue Point Catholic Church Sign

Criminal mischief included vulgar phrase relating to God and a possible reference to death of local teenager.

Suffolk Police are investigating a criminal mischief incident at the Our Lady of Snow Church in Blue Point that was reported as a possible hate crime. A parish member, who requested anonymity, told Patch the mass schedule sign, in front of the 'big' church on Blue Point Avenue, was defaced with three phrases, including “666” and a vulgar reference to God sometime during the weekend of May 6. The third phrase was a date on the sign--March 14, 2012-- which corresponds to the date of the death of Blue Point 17-year-old Billy Schettino. A Suffolk County Police Department spokesperson stated there was no releasable information available as of Monday evening relating to the incident. 3 Sayville Teens Arrested in Hot Bagels Burglary

Canine unit discovers proceeds, cash register in nearby woods.

Three Sayville teenagers are under arrest and charged with burglarizing the Hot Bagels business on North Main St. in Sayville early Monday morning, according to Suffolk Police. Police say Fifth Precinct Officer Kevin Sison was on patrol at approximately 12:35 a.m. when he discovered the bagel store had been burglarized.  Sison notified surrounding units, including Canine Unit Officer Michael Cassidy, and police began to search the area. Cassidy's dog, Thor, was able to pick up a scent and led police to proceeds from the burglary, as well as a cash register, in a wooded area just west of the bagel shop, say police.
