Michael Miller also thanks supporters for help in recent board race.
By Michael Miller I would like to congratulate John Lynch, Rebecca Campbell, and Bill Milligan. They worked hard and are truly a class act. I know that you all will do what is best for this community. I wish you the best of luck, along with the rest of the board in your pressing issues at hand. Jane Burgess and Andrea O’Neill, the community thanks you for your service and you will be missed. “You know we just don’t recognize the most significant moments of our lives while they are happening.” - Dr. Archibald “Moonlight” Graham. As a fairly new member to this community, I would like to extend my most sincere appreciation to the individuals, families and businesses that helped me throughout my board of education run. Even though I did …
Voters elected three newcomers and removed two incumbents in this week's vote.
Is electing three brand-new board of education members to a board, which is the case in Bayport-Blue Point, a good sign or a bad sign or any sign of voter sentiment? Is losing three tenured board members in one year (two were defeated and one has chosen not to run) a good thing or a bad thing? Patch wants your thoughts on the voter decisions made regarding B-BP's board of education this week. Vote in our poll and comment below. We'll compile results next week.

By a small margin most residents voted against the proposed idea.
It clearly is a debatable topic, and the vote was close, but the majority of readers don't believe there should be a ban on smoking at the beach. The tally was 55% no, and 44% yes, with no one advocating for having a special smoking section at a beach. The comments tended to be those against smoking, not only at the beach but in any public place where others could be impacted. "I definitely think there should be a ban. Beaches and parks are full of children that shouldn't have to breath in their second hand smoke. Even if someone sits off by themself it still lingers in the air and you truly can't get away from it. It doesn't make sense that ppl can't smoke in bars but can at a playground!," wrote BP mom. Reader Wendy Liu doesn't believe …

Here are reasons for reducing the board's size.
Should the Bayport-Blue Point Board of Education have five members? Answer: • Jericho Public Schools • South Side Public Schools (Rockville Centre) • Manhasset Public Schools • Commack Public Schools All of the above have five Board members. We all know their outstanding ratings. But if not, open this link: Five-member boards navigate great schools-no doubt. Other reasons? Cost: Travel and expenses were in the thousands for a school board association event in a recent June. If the board had five members, that figure would be about half. That means more money for our kids. Of course there are administrative costs, membership dues, meals, computer hardware, software and maintenance as well. There are costs associated with each board member…

A majority of readers claim not to text and drive but nearly 20 percent admit doing so.
In late April New York State Police launched a special effort to crack down on texting and driving. Between the week of April 23 and April 29 officers issued 172 tickets for cell phone violations and 32 citations for texting while driving. As part of the coverage of that program Patch asked readers what they felt about drivers who text given statistics that drivers talking on phones are four times more likely to be involved in a crash, and that the behavior of such drivers is equivalent to the behavior of drunk drivers at the threshold of the legal limit of .08 BAC. Texting increases the risk of driving on the road more than 23 times. The Patch poll revealed that 69 percent of readers claim not to text and drive, 17 percent break the law …

Patch asks readers to chime in on what business they'd like to see move into vacant stores.
This standalone business building, on the south side of Montauk Highway just east of Blue Point Avenue in Blue Point, is ready for a tenant. It's been cleaned up a bit and Patch can't even recall what was located there most recently. What would you like to move into this vacancy? Comment below, take our poll and we'll compile the feedback at the end of the week.

BBP residents definitely don't want another hair salon in downtown store area.
A majority of Bayport-Blue Point residents want one particular business to come into the Middle Road business district: a coffee shop. That’s the feedback to last week’s Visions for Vacancies article on what should move into the former nail salon at the intersection of Middle Road and Bayport Avenue. Of the 52 votes cast, 35 voters endorsed a coffee house, no one voted for another hair stylist, a chic clothing store got nine votes, a pet shop got two votes, another nail salon received six votes. Stay tuned Friday to give your input on this week’s Visions for Vacancies spotlight. In the meantime cast your vote for the best local florist by clicking here.

The pungent pods can keep gums healthy, ease pain and stimulate the imagination.
A few months ago, one of my readers commented that as an artist, she wondered if there was an herb that stimulated creativity. So I did a bit of research and I was surprised to find out that cloves are quite effective for this purpose. I've always liked the aroma of cloves, probably because I associate them with holiday foods and making pomander balls in Girl Scouts. Bleeding fingers aside, the spicy scent of oranges studded with these prickly little buds is one of my favorites and I still throw a couple in a musty closet and hang them around places I forbid my curious cats. Cloves are the immature buds of the Syzygium Aromaticum tree, a relative of the Magnolia. Once only found in, appropriately, the Spice Islands, demand for these …

Patch welcomes letters to the editor. Email judy.mottl@patch.com. By Andrea O'Neill Bayport-Blue Point Board of Education VP and Trustee The ultimate role of a school board is not to run the schools but to ensure that schools are well run. The Board of Education is an intricate part of a school district and has several important jobs. One of which is to be sure that the proper financial decisions are made in order to fund educational programs and supply classrooms, with also being fiscally responsible to the taxpayers of the district. This is a very difficult task with the decreasing school aid and increasing costs i.e.: fuel; oil and the economic climate the county is currently facing. Ultimately we need to continue to improve our school…
