Pols hope the cost savings will keep the company from taking its 1,600 jobs off Island.
Hoping to prevent the loss of 1,600 jobs on Long Island, the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency on Thursday floated an incentive package worth millions to Broadridge Financial - a public company that has threatened to move off-Island if officials didn’t find a way to help it trim costs. If the financial services company takes the offer - which its board will decide on in June - then it'll come as a disappointment to officials in New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, Ohio and Texas who were trying to woo the $2.2 billion company into moving to their states. Lawmakers strolled in for the ribbon cutting ceremony though public attendance was still pretty light as of 10:30 a.m. Bank officials expect a crowd though once Little League games are done and shoppers hit the downtown area. The fun runs until 2 p.m. today with free hot dogs, an ice cream cart and prizes including a $1,000 shopping spree and hourly drawings to win a $100 TD Bank gift card. A chapel service for Bayport-Blue Point teacher Doug Monsell will be held today, Saturday, at 12:30 p.m. at Raynor & D'Andrea Funeral Home at 245 Montauk Highway, in West Sayville. interment following at St. Ann's Cemetery in Sayville. Monsell, a business teacher and high school golf coach, was a well-liked educator who lost his fight against liver disease on Wednesday morning.
Accident took place Friday night in front of the Attias Flea Market.
A woman is in critical condition after being hit by a car in front of the Attias Flea Market in Sayville Friday night, police said. The accident occurred at 8:39 p.m. at the intersection of the eastbound Sunrise Highway service road and Broadway Avenue when Bonnie Gallagher, of Centereach, who was driving a 2001 Chevy, struck 62-year-old Shamim Bezum. Bezum suffered head trauma and fractures to her pelvis and arm. She was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue in critical condition. Gallagher was not injured in the crash, police said. Police are asking anyone with information on the crash to call Fifth Squad detectives at 631-854-8552.

Academy Street Elementary students help raise funds for a worthy cause.
Students of Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District recently attended an assembly in which a check in the amount of $283 was presented to Patricia Conway, a representative for the Friends of Karen charity. The check reflected the amount of money collected by the students during the Small Change Drive held over the course of a month. This is the sixth year that the Peer Leaders group of Academy Street has invited students to participate in the Small Change program, and in that period of time, students have collected over $3,500 for Friends of Karen. The charity is dedicated to providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Friends of …

Accepting the challenge of reducing, reusing, and recycling while commemorating Earth Day, Lincoln Avenue kindergarten students recently traded ideas and displayed amazing ingenuity during a Recycle Fair. “The children were asked to reuse things around the house like cans, wood, bottles, paper towel tubes, etc., to create a new item,” explained teacher Gina LoCurto. After finding unique ways to repurpose recyclables, the students showcased great creativity by making various kinds of instruments, flower pots/boxes, and even a game of bowling. “There were some pretty cool projects,” said Megan Dailey, who was one of Mrs. Gonzalez’s Kindergarten students. “My favorite was Alexia’s. Stanley E. Gillette, 88, was an active member of the Bayport Fire Department for 71 years.
Funeral services will be held today for lifelong Bayport resident Stanley E. Gillette, Sr. who passed away Monday and had been a volunteer firefighter for the Bayport Fire Department for 71 years. The 88-year-old Gillette served as chief and Commissioner of the Bayport Fire District; served in the US Army in the Pacific Theatre during World War II and was a member of the American Legion, Smith Weaver Post in Sayville. He is survived by his wife, Gloria, his two children; Lee and his wife Bonnie of Bayport and Wendy Meyer and her husband Gregg of Texas, as well as his five grandchildren; Jeff, Jill, LJ, Jamie and Emma, and his five great-grandchildren.
