Holiday Events, BOE Meeting, Library Programs on Tap This Week

As December kicks off there are plenty of community events, local group meetings and organization happenings.

Here is a guide to what’s happening this week between Blue Point and West Sayville:

Monday, Dec. 2

The annual Bayport-Blue Point Chamber Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held in front of the Bayport-Blue Point High School on at 7 p.m.  There will be pictures with Santa, hot chocolate and holiday music.

Tuesday, December 3

A Chanukah celebration, featuring a menorah lighting as well as gifts for children, will be held at 5 p.m. in Sayville, at the corner of Railroad Avenue and Main Street.

The Bayport-Blue Point Library will host a program called “New York, New York: Urban Gems to be Seen in 2013,” at 7 p.m. featuring a look at New York City’s five boroughs provide a never-ending source for new  discoveries. Pat Sommerstad will explore in depth several NYC favorites from a new perspective and discover new, exciting and often under appreciated urban gems.

Sayville Friends of the Library will meet at the library at 7 p.m.

Come down to the Sayville Library for an evening of community bridge starting at 7 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 5

A senior fitness class will be held at 1 p.m. at the Sayville Library.

Friday, Dec. 6

Sayville Library hosts a film and dessert event starting at 1 p.m.

The Sayville business community and school district are hosting a “Parent’s Night Out,” offering parents a few hours to shop while having their children taken care of by high school students. The program at the Sayville High School runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and high school students will be available to watch children ages five and up. Admission-$20 first child; $5 for every additional child. Parents are asked to reserve a spot by emailing LPerlin@sayvilleschools.org by December 4.

Saturday, Dec. 7

The Long Island Maritime Museum in West Sayville will host a Jingle Bell Walk beginning at 9 a.m. This fun-filled event features a non-demanding course that winds around the grounds of the museum.  Before beginning the walk, registered children will be given jingle bells to attach to their sneakers, along with mini holiday stockings to fill up with goodies as they encounter Santa's elves along the way.  Following the walk, Santa Clause will arrive by boat and will be available for photos in the library. Those attending are asked to bring an unwrapped children’s gift for the Toys for Tots campaign.
