Tropical Storm Andrea to Bring Heavy Rains to Long Island

Long Island could see upwards of four inches of rain before the storm moves out.

This story was written by Patch Local Editor Scott P. Moore and posted by Judy Mottl.

The tropical storm bearing down on the Florida coastline on Thursday will race up the east coast and drop up to four inches of rain on Long Island on Friday.

Tropical Storm Andrea, a moderately-strengthened storm with sustained winds of 60 miles per hour as of the 8 a.m. National Hurricane Center update, is expected make landfall over the eastern Florida panhandle sometime during the next 12 hours.

As the storm continues up the coastline, an approaching low-pressure front will pull Andrea in to our area. The remnants of the storm are expected to drop anywhere between two and four inches of rain on Long Island from late Thursday evening to early Saturday morning.

The storm, or remnants of it, are not forecasted to bring any storm surges or hurricane-force winds to the area, as most of Andrea's tropical characteristics will be gone by the time the storm reaches the coast of Maryland.

The National Weather Service, in a Hazardous Weather Outlook, notes that small stream and urban flooding will be possible with the storm, but coastal flooding is not expected.

As of 10:30 a.m., the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center have not placed Long Island in any tropical storm watches or warnings.

Andrea is the first named storm of the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which began on June 1.
