Scholarships, Fund Set Up in Memory of B-BP Teacher

Community groups aim to keep Doug Monsell's spirit alive and ensure his girls go to college.

Two Bayport-Blue Point organizations are making sure the life of Doug Monsell is never forgotten with the creation of two new scholarships and a fundraising effort to help the Bayport-Blue Point teacher’s family.

A B-BP Class of 1983 graduate, Monsell succumbed to liver disease on May 16 while awaiting an organ transplant, leaving behind a wife and two young daughters. The 47-year-old was well liked and loved as both an educator and coach.

This year’s annual Bayport-Blue Point Booster Club Golf Outing will donate half of the proceeds to the Monsell family with the other half benefiting a new weight room at the high school.

The Bayport-Blue Point Foundation is collecting donations for two efforts. The Monsell Girls Education Fund will help ensure that Monsell’s two young daughters will not miss out on a college education. The second effort is the creation of a Bayport-Blue Point Graduating Business Student Scholarship named in Monsell’s honor.

Those wishing to donate to the Foundation efforts can send checks, payable to whichever effort (Girls Educational Fund or BBP Business Scholarship), to PO Box 750, Bayport, NY 11705.
