Sayville Senior Graduate Garners VFW Freedom Essay Award

Dana Schulz receives scholarship award for essay on sacrifices made by military families.

Members of Sayville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 433 welcomed Dana Schulz, Sayville HS Class of 2012, to the June meeting to congratulate her on being the winner of the Post's annual "Freedom is not Free" essay contest.  Commander Marc Gilbert introduced Dana to the membership and she read her winning essay to the group. Dana received a warm round of applause for her touching essay on the sacrifices that servicemembers and their families make to ensure the security of our country. The daughter of a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Dana is personally familiar with what those sacrifices entail.   As the winner of the contest Dana received a scholarship worth $500, to be used to assist with her continuing education. The daughter of John and Lynnette Schulz of Sayville, Dana will be attending the University of Maryland this fall. The Sayville VFW hosts the " Freedom is not Free" essay contest every year.  It is open to all seniors at Sayville HS who are continuing their education after graduation.
