Sayville Girl Scouts Collaborate to Earn Bronze Award

Patch sincerely thanks Annisa Earvolino for providing the article below. It was posted by Judy Mottl.

Sunrise Drive Girl Scout Troops 1260 and 1361 worked together on their community service project to earn the GS Bronze Award.

They worked many hours to develop a plan to collect, organize, prepare donations for Birthday Wishes of Long Island, which provides birthday parties to children in homeless shelters on Long Island.

The girls recognized how much they like to celebrate their own birthdays and felt they wanted to make other kids happy on their birthday!  The girls started by collecting copy paper boxes, (which were wrapped and served as the vehicle to deliver the party in a box).

Then they designed posters and a flyer to ask for donations.  Flyers were distributed to Sunrise Drive students and their families requesting donations of birthday party supplies...plates, cups, napkins, noisemakers, decorations, candles, plastic cutlery, crafts, toys and juice boxes.  Each girl also went to local merchants asking for donations.

Once they had all the items, they wrapped the boxes and filled them with the necessary items for a party of 8.

They prepared 52 boxes and were able to provide over $500 worrth of toys to be given as presents to the homeless children.

Birthday Wishes of Long Island was very appreciative of the girls hard work.  It is the largest single donation the Long Island chapter has received.

Some of the girls (with their parents) have signed up to be volunteer bakers for the birthday parties as well.

The girls would like to spread the word to let others know they can help too.   Donations small and large are always accepted at Birthday Wishes.

The troop leaders would like to congratulate the girls on a job well done!
