Sayville Class B Champs Battle Against 'Big C'

Field hockey team donates more than $1,000 to Islip Breast Cancer Coalition from 'Play 4 A Cure' fundraiser.

The Sayville girls field hockey team, which won the Suffolk County Small Schools “Class B” Championship, engaged in a battle against the “Big C”—Breast Cancer—during their phenomenal undefeated season.

The Sayville varsity and JV girls field hockey teams donned their pink socks and jerseys on Oct. 15 for Play 4 A Cure, the third annual fundraising event to benefit the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition.

The mid-season fundraiser raised more than $1,000 for the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition, according to the team parent volunteers who served as event organizers.

While celebrating at their end-of-the-year dinner, the varsity field hockey team and coaches presented two representatives from the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition, Maryann McGahey and Grace Drago, with a check.

Kathy Ryder, one of the parent volunteers said the girls began raising money that Friday, Oct. 19, when both the varsity and JV girls paid to have pink hair extensions put in their hair after practice.

"With the $400 raised, $200 went to the hairdresser, $200 went to The Islip Breast Cancer Coalition," Ryder said.
