No. 81 - Read to a Dog
Cuddle up with Callie the Golden Retriever for some fuss-free reading at the library.
On Tuesday afternoons, in a quiet corner of Bayport-Blue Point Library sits Callie, a golden retriever dog, patiently waiting for children to read books to her.
Callie and her owner Pat Gregory volunteer their time for this special children's program at the . Both of them completed six weeks of pet therapy training to become certified. With a mellow temperament, Callie has the patience to handle the children. She's right next to them, listening to every word they read.
Gail Silsbe from the library said that lots of children are interested in this program.

"For reluctant readers, the dog makes them feel comfortable," she said. "They get to work on their reading skills in a fun, non-judgmental way."
Children first through fifth grade can sign up at the children's desk in the library for half-hour reading sessions with Callie. They can bring their own books or grab one off the shelf.

Of course after reading the book, children get plenty of time for hugs with Callie. They can also look at her "baby" book and write her a note. Readers that complete five visits with Callie receive a special reading certificate.
