Incoming Freshmen Organize Bake Sale for Charity

Local girls organize bake sale to benefit church food pantry.

A group of soon-to-be freshmen are donating one of their last summer Sundays to hold a bake sale benefiting a local church food pantry.

Emma Hooks, 13, and her friends Hanna DePalma and Suzanne Chiappetta thought a bake sale would be a great way to fulfill their community service hours required for confirmation at and give back to their community.

"So donating the money to the church food pantry just made sense," Emma Hooks said.

The sale is set for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Bayport Memorial Park.

In the past, Hooks, her older sister Lily, and Lily's classmates organized a streetwide Charity Drive during the summer, and they would ask neighbors to donate clothing, food and money.

"We would donate the clothing to the Salvation Army and donate the food and money to the church food pantry," Hooks said. "This year, we thought this would be a fun way to help the community and get some [community service] hours, that we could all do together."

At the moment, the girls don't have any fundraising goals set, but Hooks said they "want to raise as much money as possible to help others."

Visit the girls and pick up some baked goods Aug. 21 at Bayport Memorial Park, 1:30 p.m.
