From Trash To Treasure With Keep Islip Clean

Local residents honored at recycled art contest.

Creative people took the concept of "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" to a new level during Keep Islip Clean's inaugural Recycled Art Contest, held during the recent Town of Islip Earth Day Festival.

Entrants used their creativity to transform recyclable material into art judged in three categories divided by age group. Winners included a doll made from boxes and buttons by Sayville resident Juliana Provenzano in the Children's Category, an intricately designed Fireman's Helmet fashioned from a traffic cone by Andrew Mirabito in the Young Adult Category, and a free form sculpture made from egg cartons by Sayviille resident Luanne D'Angelo in the Adult Category. The subjects ranged widely from whimsical to thought-provoking, but all were made exclusively from material headed for the recycling bin or trash can.

The judges, all KIC volunteers, were KIC Chairman and Sayville resident Pam Raymond, local artist Michael Cochran and KIC Junior Commissioner Anamaria Romero. The winning entries will be placed in KIC's new "Museum of Litter," which will travel to local schools, encouraging students to think creatively in their recycling efforts.
