Fourth Annual Smiles Change Lives Turkey Trot

Thanksgiving Day race to benefit nonprofit organization providing orthodontic care to economically disadvantaged children begins 9 a.m. at Corey Beach.

Since its 2008 launch by local orthodontist and runner Dr. Frank R. Egan, of Bayport, the Thanksgiving morning Smiles Change Lives Turkey Trot has proven to be a great success.

"The community has embraced this tradition and we are glad to be a part of it," said race director Christine Egan.

Dr. Egan brought the northeast's first Smiles Change Lives (SCL) program to Long Island in 2008. SCL is a national nonprofit program dedicated to providing orthodontic care to economically disadvantaged children. More than 1,000 participants from 19 states raised more than $20,000 to benefit Long Island kids in 2009. In 2010, Dr. Egan accepted an invitation to join the national board of Smiles Change Lives.

In 2010, enough money was raised to help more than 70 low-income Long Island kids receive the orthodontic treatment they desperately need, according to Dr. Egan.

Race Information: The race course was designed by runners for runners. The race has been sanctioned by the USATF and features electronic timing by JMS Racing.
