Bayport Scout Dedicates Eagle Project to Two Special Goals

The Doug Monsell Education Fund, high school lunch area are focus of scouting endeavor.

Bayport resident Chandler Varone aims to help two different ways with his upcoming Eagle Scout project.

First the high school senior hopes to help fund an education program set up for the daughters of a beloved Bayport-Blue Point teacher who passed away this past school year, and he also wants to make warm-weather lunchtime more comfortable for his fellow Bayport-Blue Point students.

Varone is aiming to build a special outdoor eating area right outside the high school cafeteria, featuring tables and benches, that will be built on a patio of donated and engraved 4”x 8” brick pavers.

The $50 brick cost will support both the lunch area project as well as provide money to the education fund for Doug Monsell’s daughters. Monsell, a well liked business teacher, lost his battle with liver disease in May.

“The community endured a horrible loss with the passing of Mr. Monsell who was a awesome teacher and a good friend,” said the member of Life Scout Troop 329. "It's the least I can do for someone who did so much for me," said Varone, who was a member of the district's business club, DECA, which made the state competition under Monsell's direction.

"He was always smiling, always enjoying the class," said Varone.

The donated bricks can be engraved with appreciation of loved ones, or a business or a person’s name. "People can also donate to the project without buying a brick,” added Varone who plans to start on his project by August.

The outdoor dining area will also feature a four-foot fence around the perimeter of the 15 foot by 25 foot patio.

“By purchasing this brick, you are investing in a 4” x 8” piece of real estate that will be beautiful and everlasting as well as honor the memory of Mr. Monsell,” Varone wrote in a letter to potential donors.

Those interested in donating a brick, or just donating to the causes, can download the attached form (just click through the picture to see the uploaded document) or email Varone at cvarone10@aol.com.

Checks should be made payable to Troop 329 with the memo subject reading “Chandlers Eagle,” and mailed to 321 McConnell Avenue, Bayport, NY 11705. For more information Varone can be also reached at 631-707-3628.

And so the taxpayer is once again asked to give more to an already out of control and bloatedRead More system. Every year the school districts on Long Island receive increases of millions of dollars to their budgets, and still they want to bleed the taxpayer for more. As two income families struggle to pay exorbitant tax bills, we’re asked to pay even more? We’ll here’s a novel idea, how about if the teachers union’s began demanding less? This early retirement baloney must stop, salaries should be capped, administrators and their staffs must be cut by at least eighty percent. In addition, educators and staff should have to pay for their own medical and retirement plans just as the rest of us must. Here on Long Island, families are suffering and sacrificing, and many are being forced to leave due to taxes which are out of control. It is time for educators to cease hiding behind children with threats of decreased student programs, and to make an honest and realistic observation as to why things are as bad as they are. To blame parents for not paying enough into the system to support the schools is ludicrous. The real problem lies in a system which is self serving, and run by incompetents blind to the harm they are inflicting upon our children and families.
