Patch thanks John Selvaggio for contributing this article. It was posted by Judy Mottl.

The Selvaggio family of Bayport is once again holding a baseball / softball equipment drive and delivering what is collected to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

They are being assisted this year by All Pro Sports Academy of Bellport of Bellport and Grady Animal Hospital of Sayville who have volunteered as collection sites.

Wood and metal bats, balls, mitts, catchers gear, helmets, and uniforms for all ages tee ball thru high school are needed.

This reservation is among the poorest communities in the country and the children there face third world living conditions along with drugs, violence, and high suicide rates.

Nicolas Mejia, who is an exchange student from Ecuador and living this school year with the Selvaggio's, is also collecting with students at the BBPHS and will be traveling to Pine Ridge with his host family the day after graduation to deliver what you have donated.

That old mitt or bat stored away from your youth can once again create hope, dreams, and memories for a child or young adult. You can contact John and Linda Selvaggio at (631) 363-2873.
