21 Main Hosts Relay for Life Fundraiser

Second annual cocktail party is a success for charity.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Sayville held its second-annual cocktail fundraising party at 21 Main Steakhouse recently and this year’s event drew about 40 attendees, down from last year’s 75 guests.

The Relay for Life team organizes these events as supplemental fundraising efforts, according to Jennifer Hoek, coordinator of the Sayville team. There was a 50/50 raffle at the door as well as more than 30 baskets that were raffled at the end of the evening.

“All the businesses in town were very generous in their donations for the Chinese auction baskets,” Hoek said. Some of the baskets included gift certificates to nearby favorites such as , the , Om Shanti Om Yoga, Locust Avenue Farms, the , , , , and .

Jewelry vendor Stella and Dot was also on hand raising funds for the charity courtesy of Hoek’s cousin Tamara Meade. Keeping it all in the family, Hoek’s sister Melissa was showing off beauty products from BeautiControl, and also offering guests purple hair extensions for $10 to support the cause.

While this affair, as well as the recent one held at were social events, the actual Relay for Life event is much more reflective in nature, Hoek added, honoring those who have passed as well as survivors. This year’s theme is “Walking in a Winter Wonderland,” and it will feature a visit with Santa (get your Christmas pictures done early), a performance by Jester Jim and more snow-themed fun.

Tickets included hors d’oeuvres, beer/wine/soda, a door prize ticket and a complimentary goody bag, featuring a water bottle (thanks to a donation from Sinagra Chiropractic), samples of beauty care products and awareness pins.

The Relay for Life team will meet on May 31 at the Middle School Cafeteria. For more information about the event and how to participate, visit www.relayforlife.org/sayvilleny.

And so the taxpayer is once again asked to give more to an already out of control and bloatedRead More system. Every year the school districts on Long Island receive increases of millions of dollars to their budgets, and still they want to bleed the taxpayer for more. As two income families struggle to pay exorbitant tax bills, we’re asked to pay even more? We’ll here’s a novel idea, how about if the teachers union’s began demanding less? This early retirement baloney must stop, salaries should be capped, administrators and their staffs must be cut by at least eighty percent. In addition, educators and staff should have to pay for their own medical and retirement plans just as the rest of us must. Here on Long Island, families are suffering and sacrificing, and many are being forced to leave due to taxes which are out of control. It is time for educators to cease hiding behind children with threats of decreased student programs, and to make an honest and realistic observation as to why things are as bad as they are. To blame parents for not paying enough into the system to support the schools is ludicrous. The real problem lies in a system which is self serving, and run by incompetents blind to the harm they are inflicting upon our children and families.
