PHOTOS: The Many Signs of a Heat Wave

It hit 90 degrees shortly after noon in the Sayville-Bayport area.

Just after noon the thermometer hit 90 degrees and was still rising in the Sayville-Bayport communities. A quick drive through town clearly indicated most people were opting for air conditioned living spaces or the beach.

The Islip Town recreation workers at Foster Avenue beach said business was busy, and the small bay beach was dotted with umbrellas as residents sought refuge from the slight bay breeze. The park's playground and tennis courts, however, were ghosttown-like.

So was the sitting area at the downtown Starbucks, despite alluring umbrellas, which is usually jammed at the lunchtime hour.
