Roadside Memorials. Enough is Enough

What is the point of these home made tributes?

Over the last decade or so there has been an explosion of impromptu memorials showing up on the roadways of Long Island. They range from simple flowers to elaborate shrines complete with working lights. Although, I am sympathetic to anybody who loses a loved one in a tragic accident I fail to see the point of this practice. Grief is a complex emotion but, it doesn't seem fitting to memorialize the spot where a loved one met their tragic end. I feel it would be more appropriate to celebrate the departed's life and all the special moments shared with that person in a more private and constructive way. Safety is another concern, I have often seen gatherings on the side or the median of the Southern State Parkway in what appears to be some sort of off the cuff vigil.Seems dangerous. Finally, it poses a distraction to other drivers who can't help themselves to look and see. Driving is serious business. There is a time and a place for everything. We have cemeteries to grieve, leave mementos and reflect on our lost loved ones in private instead of on a busy road. I have lost people in car accidents and have never felt the inclination to drive by the spot let alone build an altar. What do you think?
