Update: One Trial Left for Capozzi and Team

Bayport's Debbie Capozzi and women's match racing team qualify the event for 2012 Olympic Games, but must win May trials to secure spot.

Bayport sailor and her women's match racing team may be among the first to debut the event in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London thanks to their world championship win in Australia last week, which qualified the US for the Games.

On Dec. 24, The San Francisco Chronicle reported:

In front of a packed Fremantle grandstand last week - after 14 days of racing involving 29 teams - 2008 laser radial gold medalist Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, Fla.) skippered her Team Maclaren crew of Molly O'Bryan Vandemoer (Stanford) and Debbie Capozzi (Bayport, NY) to beat Great Britain in four races and win the 2011 world championship title.

But the team must still win in a final set of trials May 4-10 to secure a spot on the U.S. team. They'll go up against a second [San Francisco] Bay Area-connected team skippered by San Francisco skipper Genny Tulloch. Tulloch's crew is Alice Manard Leonard, a 1997 Stanford graduate, and Jenn Chamberlin of Washington, D.C. The team made it to the championship quarterfinals in Australia and placed 11th overall.

Good luck Team Maclaren!
