Torsiello Gets Top Seed in Girls Tennis Individual Championships

Phantoms junior looking to cap off strong season with tournament victory.

Laura Torsiello, Bayport's finest young girls tennis player, will open this weekend's Section XI Division III Individual Championship tournament as the no. 1 overall seed for the second consecutive year.

Torsiello, last year's runner up, has led the Phantoms with a strong 11-1 campaign this fall, her only loss coming in a non-league match with Half Hollow Hills. The decorated junior has been playing at the varsity level since seventh grade, when she earned her first of three all-County honors. She was also named an all-State doubles player in eighth grade.

The first two rounds of the tournament will take place at Longwood High School on Saturday afternoon. Should Torsiello advance, she will play in the semifinals on Monday and the finals on Tuesday afternoon.

And so the taxpayer is once again asked to give more to an already out of control and bloatedRead More system. Every year the school districts on Long Island receive increases of millions of dollars to their budgets, and still they want to bleed the taxpayer for more. As two income families struggle to pay exorbitant tax bills, we’re asked to pay even more? We’ll here’s a novel idea, how about if the teachers union’s began demanding less? This early retirement baloney must stop, salaries should be capped, administrators and their staffs must be cut by at least eighty percent. In addition, educators and staff should have to pay for their own medical and retirement plans just as the rest of us must. Here on Long Island, families are suffering and sacrificing, and many are being forced to leave due to taxes which are out of control. It is time for educators to cease hiding behind children with threats of decreased student programs, and to make an honest and realistic observation as to why things are as bad as they are. To blame parents for not paying enough into the system to support the schools is ludicrous. The real problem lies in a system which is self serving, and run by incompetents blind to the harm they are inflicting upon our children and families.
