Softball Trounces John Glenn To Clinch Share of League VI

Seven-run second inning sets tone for blowout victory.

The Sayville softball team exploded for 14 runs in just 4 1/3 innings, en route to a 14-2 victory over John Glenn Friday afternoon on Senior Day at Sayville High School.

"They’ve been a special part of this team," head coach Tiffany Rowan said of her seniors. "They’ve been backing us up. It was nice to get everyone in. They played their hearts out. My seniors show up every single day to practice, work really hard, and it shows. It paid off."

With the win, Sayville clinched at least a share of the League VI title, and can win it outright depending on the outcome of a game between Shoreham-Wading River and Miller Place. The Golden Flashes also have to finish a game with Miller Place that was suspended due to inclement weather Saturday morning.

Though they do not know who their opponent will be in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday, it doesn't matter much to Rowan.

"Playoffs is like a brand new season," she said. "We’ve got to come ready to play. We’re worried about what we do. It’s about us. We come out, we play hard, we play flawless defense and we hit the ball like we can, we’ll be fine. I’m not really looking at who I’m playing, I’m just looking to get them all set."

Every player in the Golden Flashes (13-4, 14-5) lineup got at least one hit, including eighth grader Olivia Kaczmarek, who went 3-for-3 with a home run, a triple and a double with five RBI. Kaczmarek was denied a chance to hit for the cycle when the umpires deemed the game over after Kelsey Schneider's two-run triple put the Section XI run rule into effect with one out in the fifth inning.

Senior Maggie Boyd threw four innings, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks, while also striking out a pair. Merissa Selts came on and pitched a perfect fifth, striking out one.

Sayville blew the game open in the bottom of the second inning, scoring seven times. They added four more in the bottom of the fourth, and Maddi Vetrano's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth secured a less-conventional walk-off victory, as they had reached a 12-run lead after the losing team had batted five times.
