Sayville Wins Rutgers Trophy as Top Suffolk Team

Hoss honored as top coach, while Ferreira wins top QB award.

Sayville left with an abundance of hardware at this year's Suffolk County Football Coaches Association dinner held Monday night at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge.

The Golden Flashes won the Rutgers Trophy, presented to the top team in Suffolk County annually. It's the third time in school history (2004 and 1972) they've won the honor.

Sayville Westhampton Beach in the Suffolk County Division III championship and Lawrence in the Class III Long Island title game. The Golden Flashes were the only undefeated team on Long Island this season with a 12-0 record.

"We weren’t always the biggest or always the fastest, but one thing this team has is a tremendous amount of heart and a tremendous amount of character," said Sayville coach Rob Hoss. "If you believe in what you set out and the goals we’ve provided, you’ll have an opportunity."

Sayville scored a Long Island record 78 points in the Long Island championship, which was the highest scoring football game in Long Island history - regular or post-season. The Golden Flashes were able to produce a fair amount of offense thanks to quarterback Steven Ferreira, who set Long Island records for passing yards and touchdowns. He was honored with the Boomer Esiason Award as the top quarterback in Suffolk County.

Ferreira was also a nominee for the Hansen Award, given to the top player in Suffolk, but it was a split and went to Sachem's Dalton Crossan and Floyd's Stacey Bedell.

"It means a lot to my career with all the records I’ve broken," Ferreira said. "Receiving these awards, especially for the team with the Rutgers Trophy, there’s no better feeling."

Hoss, who was honored with the Fred Fusaro Award as the top coach in Suffolk County voted on by his peers, felt the same way about the Rutgers and his 2011 championship season.

"I’m so happy for everyone who plays Sayville football," Hoss said. "We’re happy to bring the trophy home for everyone in our community and our team. It’s a great honor."
