Sayville Soccer Star Goes Pro

Domenica Hodak now a member of the Washington Spirit.

A former Sayville High School soccer star is now a part of the fledgling women's pro soccer league.

Following a solid four-year career at the University of Maryland, Domenica Hodak is now a member of the Washington Spirit of the new National Women’s Soccer League. Hodak tried out for the Spirit as a “discovery pick” and wound up making the team.

“I am so excited to play in the NWSL,” she told Big Apple Soccer. “The players on my team and the other teams are going to help me improve my game and grow as a player.”

The West Sayville native made her professional debut April 14 in Washington’s 1-1 draw with the Boston Breakers. Hodak entered the game as a substitute in the 80th minute. She also played in Washington’s 1-1 draw against Western New York on April 20.

During her collegiate career, Hodak made 82 appearances playing midfield and defense. She helped lead Maryland to a Sweet 16 appearance in the 2011 NCAA Tournament and a second round berth in 2012. Her 82 appearances tie her for 15th all-time for most appearances.

In high school, Hodak was a two-year captain and named first team all-state three times. Other honors include being named Suffolk County Small School Player of the Year twice and one of Top Drawer Soccer’s Top 100 recruits.
