Sayville Puts In Overtime for Field Hockey Title

Golden Flashes capture Suffolk County Class B championship.

The old adage that “someone has to lose” was stretched past the normal realm of winners and losers in Tuesday’s Suffolk County Class B field hockey title game. Top-seeded Sayville and third-ranked Rocky Point battled for two halves, plus an additional two overtimes and a round of penalty strokes without deciding a winner. It wasn’t until Taylor Mills beat Rocky Point goalie Casey Heely in the second round — a sudden-death round — that winners and losers were decided.

“It was the best field hockey game I have ever seen,” said Athletic Director Dennis Maloney who commended the amazing team. “It was a great game for our Girls, our coach Patty Fedelem, and it was characteristic of their hard work and their energy which they brought to every game. Everyone who attended was very proud of our girls!”

While Sayville goalie Gianna Minogue was mobbed by celebrating teammates, Heely left the field visibly upset, having matched Minogue save for save. It’s the inevitable part of someone having to lose.
