Putting Faces to Names of Coaches, Parents

Bayport-Blue Point hosts seasonal meet-the-coaches night for winter sports.

Resident Diane Clancy had a simple reason for attending last week’s Bayport-Blue Point parent-coaches meeting night. “You get to meet the coach, put a face with the name, and be comfortable with who your child is with all the time," she said.

held its winter sports meeting, giving parents of winter sport athletes the opportunity to meet, and talk to, their child’s coaches. Coaches in attendance included: Rich Reilly and Joe Gallagher, wrestling;  Jenn Enea and Eric Heyanka, girls basketball; Vinny Ungaro, girls track; Mike Zafonte, boys track; Kyle Black and Skip Hart, boys basketball; and Phil Turano, bowling.

“I started this night about four years ago,” B-BP Athletic Director Timothy Mullins said. “I felt this would be the perfect setting for coaches to provide parents with some insight into their upcoming season, such as schedules, expectations and regulations.”

For some parents, this was their first meet-the-coaches meeting, but not for Don Brewer, whose son is playing junior varsity basketball. Brewer estimated that he’s attended as many as 10 of these meetings for his multi-sport children. “You’re supposed to attend and make sure everyone’s on the same page,” he said.

“A lot of times during the season issues arise and a night like this really helps to educate parents on the manner in which they can be handled or avoided,” Mullins said.

Sandi Giunta attended the meeting to meet Ungaro, her ninth-grade daughter’s winter track coach. “He was very clear, very straightforward with his expectations,” Giunta said. “He’s driven to get the girls to do their best.”

“The parents in the community have always been such staunch supporters of our programs and a night like this helps to keep the apprised of our athletic program and of our coaching staff,” Mullins said.
