Phantoms Sports Notebook: Fall Seasons Are Underway

Football: Costly mistakes in the Phantoms 2011 season opener allowed on Friday evening. Quarterback Brian Wright completed 10 of 23 passes for 110 yards, but threw two interceptions, including one in the end zone, which disabled any comeback attempts. The Phantoms will play their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1:30 p.m. against Center Moriches.

Boys Soccer: The Phantoms boys soccer team will host non-league opponents Southold and Pierson on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons as it kicks off its 2011 campaign. Bayport, who will be looking to improve after a 3-9 showing in 2010, will then open up its League VI schedule at East Hampton on Sept. 19.

Girls Soccer: The girls soccer team will play host to East Islip later today in its final non-league game of 2011. The girls dropped their season opener at Sayville on Saturday, 1-0. After today's game, they will have seven days off before taking on Babylon at home on Sept. 20.

Cross Country: Bayport's boys and girls cross country squads are preparing for their 2011 seasons, which are both set to start this week. On Friday, the boys will trek to Happy Valley, Pa. to take part in the Penn Relays, which is hosted by Penn State University. The preseason overnight trip will provide an early test for one of Section XI's top teams.

The girls will continue to train tirelessly throughout the week in anticipation of their first meet, a home showdown with Hampton Bays on Sept. 20. That meet will take place at Sunken Meadow State Park.
