UPDATE: Phantoms Scoreboard: Softball, Boys Lacrosse Closing in on Top Spot

Each net pair of victories this week.

Coming out of spring break, the Phantoms athletic department had plenty to cheer about. Both the softball and boys lacrosse teams notched a pair of victories to move them up in the standings. Meanwhile, the girls lacrosse team hosted Miller Place after more than a week off in a pivotal game for playoff positioning.

Baseball: The Phantoms baseball team fell victim to first-place Mattituck on Tuesday, 6-1. Mattituck ace Steve Ascher threw a two-hit complete game gem, and kept the BBP hitters off balance all day. It was Ascher's fifth victory of the season. The Phantoms dropped to 5-5 in League VII and 5-6 overall.

Softball: BBP softball's pair of victories allowed them to keep pace with Mt. Sinai atop the League VII standings, tied at 8-1. First they victimized Mercy High School in a non-league contest, 10-3. Tammy Vermuelan and Kathleen Bailey supplied the offense for the Phantoms. Vermuelan stole three bases and scored two runs to top off her 3-for-4 day at the plate, and Bailey notched a pair of RBI, going 2-for-3.

On Wednesday, Meg Brewer was the difference again for the Phantoms, smacking a game-winning solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to defeat Pierson/Bridgehampton, 2-1. She also struck out 10 in her fifth victory of the season.

They have one more game against a team over .500 (May 11 at home against Babylon) before they travel to Mt. Sinai for a game that very well could decide first place in League VII.

Boys Lacrosse: Mike DeBlasio and Frank Gluchoski each scored a hat trick in Tuesday's narrow victory 13-11 over Hauppauge. Despite being outscored in the second half, goaltender Ralph Fabiani and the Phantoms were able to hold the fort and preserve the win, which tied them for third place in League II. Fabiani made nine saves.

Girls Lacrosse: A trio of girls notched hat tricks for the Phantoms as they trounced Miller Place Friday, 19-7. Loren Generi, Fiona and Genevieve Stickney all found the back of the net three times as they built an 11-5 lead at halftime and never looked back. Freshman Cassie Dooley also chipped in with two goals and five assists. In all, ten different Phantoms scored. They improved to 5-3 in League II.
