Phantoms Girls Basketball Notebook

Girls split two contests, get first league win.

The girls varsity basketball team got its first win on Tuesday, Jan. 18 against  Mt. Sinai before losing to Amityville Thursday in an up and down week.

In Tuesday's game against Mt. Sinai, Sarah Painter led the team with 13 points while Cassie Dooley added 12 points and Paige Faherty grabbed 11 rebounds in a much needed win for the girls.

"That first league win was a long time coming and the girls played so hard," coach Jenn Enea said. "Every game they've improved and their defense was phenomenal."

After the Phantoms previous win against Stony Brook, coach Enea said she wanted to see her team have better ball movement inside and make better decisions. That's exactly what she got from them Tuesday as they shut out the Mustangs in the first quarter.

"I think that also made a big difference," Enea said. "Getting the ball inside, kicking it outside and that opened up a lot and broke down the defense."

Comeback falls short against Amityville

On Thursday it was a different story for the Phantoms. Despite bringing a 12-point deficit at halftime down to just three in the fourth quarter, BBP couldn't close the deal in a 41-36 loss.

Christy Thoden led the team with eight points, but it wasn't enough as the Phantoms shot jsut 9-21 from the foul line and allowed Amityville's center Raven Price to put up 15 against them.

"The second half we packed the middle in more," Enea said. "We worked more of a zone defense and that was working for us. We did an excellent job boxing out on the weak side so when they missed their shots we were there for the rebounds.I think in the first half we came out a little flat and didn’t take advantage of the opportunities we had foul shooting."

This young Phantoms team now sits in sixth place in League VI at 1-6.
