LAX County Title Comes To Bayport-Blue Point

Boys high school team beats Mt. Sinai 8-7 to garner first ever lacrosse championship.

For the second consecutive year, the Bayport-Blue Point boys’ lacrosse team found itself in the Suffolk County Class C title game.

But unlike 2010, the Phantoms walked out of LaValle Stadium at Stony Brook University with the hardware following its hard fought 8-7 victory over Mt. Sinai. The county title is the first for Bayport-Blue Point’s boys’ varsity team.

The Phantoms will take on Nassau County Class C champions Cold Spring Harbor Saturday back at Stony Brook.

Playing their first game since losing to Eastport-South Manor 11-10 in overtime on May 13, Bayport-Blue Point needed to shake off the rust and overcome some early nerves.

“Their goalie (Mt. Sinai’s Matt Poillon) made four or five legit saves and we hit a couple pipes and the outside of the cage a couple times early on,” said Mike Luce, Bayport-Blue Point’s head coach. “But in the second half we were able to calm down.”

Trailing 3-1 at the start of the third quarter, the game’s momentum began shifting the Phantoms’ way. Senior attackman Mike DeBlasio got the first of his three goals off a feed from Brian Ward to cut Mt. Sinai’s lead to 3-2.

Goals by Brian White, Adam Berlin and DeBlasio would give the Phantoms a 5-3 lead, which they would later extend to 6-4 following a neat behind-the-back tally by DeBlasio.

The senior attack worked to the right of the Mt. Sinai cage and appeared to be moving behind the net. But DeBlasio seized an opportunity and flicked a shot behind his back that beat Poillon to the far side.

Mt. Sinai would not go quietly and tie the score at 6. But Bayport would answer with two consecutive goals to take an 8-6 lead, one that they would not relinquish.
