Lady Phantoms Fall in Class C Title Game

Can't recover after 5-0 halftime deficit.

The Bayport-Blue Point girls lacrosse team fell in the Class C championship game for the second consecutive year, this time at the hands of Mt. Sinai, 8-6, Tuesday night at the Dowling Sports Complex in Brookhaven.

A day after the boys lacrosse team in their Class C finals, the girls were unable to duplicate their success, as they fell behind early and failed to recover.

"Our shot selection, I think the girls kind of knew," said Bayport-Blue Point head coach Ryan Gick about what went wrong in the first half. "We work all the time on throwing fakes before our shots, we were just one-dimensional as far as how we were getting our looks on the goalie."

Leading scorer Loren Generi breathed some life into the Lady Phantoms with two quick goals after a Mackenzie Miller tally got Bayport on the board early in the second half, but they were unable to climb out of the 5-0 hole they found themselves in at halftime.

"Loren faced a tough task today," said Gick. "They were locking her off the entire game. They didn’t want her to touch the ball. To get herself open the way she was, it was a great job. The whole offense in the second half had more life to it."

The Phantoms got within a goal twice, as the teams began trading goals with under 10 minutes to play in regulation on goals by Courtney Dooley, who had a pair of goals, and Genevieve Stickney, but Kasey Mitchell's second marker of the game with 4:40 to go bumped the Mustangs' lead to 8-6, providing an insurance marker that quelled any hopes of a comeback.

“We stuck together as a team, which is always the goal,” said Gick. “Winning championships is great, and that was our goal too, to come here and try to win it, but this is a close group of friends here and them sticking together is what I care about. They’ll get over this, it’s just a game. They’ll move on with their friendships that they made here.”
