Lady Flashes Drop Third Straight League Game

Looking for their first win in Suffolk County League V, the  Sayville Golden Flashes girls varsity basketball team took on the Eastport/South Manor Sharks and although Sayville led for most of the game, the girls dropped their third straight league game 32-28. 

Following their last game before the holiday break, , during which the Lady Flashes failed to score a point in the first quarter, it was important that Sayville get off to a good start and the girls did just that.

Senior forward Julia DePompeo, who had 7 points in the game, got Sayville on the board in the first quarter and then senior point guard Marissa Kahane, who led Sayville with 10 points, got hot and her third-point field goal at the beginning of the second quarter opened up a 13-6 lead for the Golden Flashes. 

But the Sharks came on strong, going on a 6-0 run, led by the shooting of Caitlyn Webber, who led all scorers with 14 points.

An aggressive press by Sayville allowed the girls to take a 17-14 lead into halftime and the Lady Flashes led 22-19 in third quarter.

However, a third-pointer by Eastport/South Manor's Stephanie Vanlandingham tied the game at the end of third quarter and then the Sharks took the lead for good in the fourth.

Fouls plagued Sayville the entire game, but especially in the second half when the Lady Flashes committed nine to Eastport/South Manor's three. 

On a positive note, junior guard Emily Meier played a strong game for Sayville.

The Golden Flashes fell to 0-3 in League V and 3-5 overall. The girls will play next on Thursday at Kings Park at 6:15 p.m.
