Golden Flashes Earn First League Victory

Amy Deau scores 15 to lead Sayville

With both team’s vying for their first League V win, the Sayville Golden Flashes staved off a late rally by Rocky Point to clinch a 41-33 victory.

Amy Deau scored six of Sayville’s seven points in a close first quarter and added four more in the second as the Golden Flashes took a 24-13 lead at the half. Sayville took a 12-point lead into the final minutes before the Eagles made a comeback to cut the lead to four. called a full court press and the girls executed well, holding the Eagles to just two points the rest of the way.

“It feels good,” DePompeo said. “It was our fourth win of the year, but our league top to bottom is the toughest league in Suffolk County. Kings Park, Harborfields, Islip, Eastport-South Manor and Miller Place… you’re talking about five teams that can knock off just about anyone in Suffolk County. We were both trying to get that first win, but it feels good.”

Deau finished with 15 points, leading Sayville. Rocky Point’s late run was stopped at four when Julia DePompeo got inside and made a layup after drawing a foul. She missed the free throw and the Golden Flashes missed seven of 11 foul shots in the quarter. They were able to overcome the missed foul shots, however, to clinch the win.

“They listened, did what we asked them to do and handled their press well. You can’t ask much more than that,” coach DePompeo said. “We have to get some more layups and hit some more foul shots. The free throws at the end were killer, we should’ve put the game away but we had to make it interesting, nothing is ever easy.”

The Golden Flashes will look to parlay their victory into another one when they face a tough Harborfields (5-0, 8-3) team on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m.

“We’re looking for a lot better performance than last time,” DePompeo said. “We played hard last time, held them to 46 points but only scored 14 so our goal is to win or at least make it respectable. Over the years we’ve played them hard, we’ve beat them a couple times when they were winning championships, so we’re looking for a better performance and to put the ball in the basket.”
