Ferreira Throws For Five TDs As Sayville Cruises Past Comsewogue

Quarterback amasses more than 200 yards passing, five scores en route to latest blowout.

In perhaps his best performance of the season, Steven Ferreira carved up the Comsewogue defense for 202 yards and five passing touchdowns as Sayville rained on the Warriors' homecoming parade with a sound 41-21 victory on Saturday.

Ferreira did all his damage in the first half, making his gaudy totals all the more impressive, as the Golden Flashes (7-0) opened up a 41-7 lead at the break. He completed 14 of 17 passing attempts.

"He was on," said Sayville head coach Robert Hoss. "He said in warm-ups he had a great feel on the ball and he played a great game. Today was one of the most crisp games of the year. He’s been great all year long, but today he was on the money."

The senior quarterback connected with his favorite target, Tom Hannan, for two quick strikes early on, capping off six- and three-play drives, respectively, giving Sayville a 13-0 lead. He caught five passes for 110 yards to go along with his two touchdowns.

"We’ve been practicing all week on converting some certain things on cover two which they were running," Hannan said. "We did a great job. Offensive line blocked, defense stepped up and it was great execution."

After Zach Sirico bruised his way into the end zone from 1 yard out, the Warriors (3-4) got on the board thanks to a nifty 29-yard rushing touchdown by running back Anthony Marrone that cut Sayville's lead to 20-7 and momentarily awakened the Comsewogue crowd.

However, Sirico broke loose on the ensuing kickoff, returning it down to the Comseweogue 38-yard line. Ferreira quickly found Tom Dieckhoff open down the sideline one play later for a 28-yard touchdown grab and the crowd was silenced again.

"Special teams, we’ve been solid on kick returns all year long," Hoss said. "We have two really dynamic guys back there in Hannan and Sirico. It gave us great field position. Offensively I knew we’d be able to do what we needed to do, but this is the kind of team that whenever someone challenges them, they just step on the peddle. All year any time this team is tested, they’ve found a way to respond."

"I was so happy for him," Hannan said of his kick return partner. "Most of the time if it’s in the middle I’m supposed to get it but he’s a great runner when he gets the ball so I knew he was going to get the job done and he did."

With the top seed heading into the playoffs essentially locked up, Sayville will enjoy their own homecoming festivites this week before taking on Kings Park next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

"Next week’s our homecoming; it’s huge for us," Hoss said. "We get great community support but next week’s going to be even more insane with all the alumni coming back, but we try to keep getting better. We’re not going to play to our opponents, we play to our ability."

With the playoffs just one week away, the team hasn't lost sight of their ultimate goal, despite their perfect start to the season.

"We’re looking to win the Rutgers Cup and the Long Island Championship," Hannan said. "And we don’t want anyone to get in our way."
