Ferreira Breaks Another Record in 42-14 Rout of Harborfields

Sayville takes down another; moves on to county title matchup vs. Westhampton.

Sayville's quarterback-of-ease, Steven Ferreira, broke another record Saturday as he shattered the Harborfields Tornadoes defense.

The Golden Flashes (10-0) scored 21 points in the first half on touchdowns by Matthew Starr, Zachary Sirico and James Rupp, leading to a 42-14 victory over Harborfields in a Suffolk Semifinal III matchup.

Ferreira went 13-for-18 with 250 yards and four touchdowns. The fourth, a connection with Tom Hannan for 63 yards, thwarted Ferreira past Tony Cappozzoli for the lead in Long Island all-time touchdown passes with 69. Ferreira also beat a record of Cappozzoli's earlier in the season, with the lead in L.I.'s all-time passing yardage, as Ferreira now sits at nearly 6,000 yards since his QB career started in 2009.

"It was a great moment, especially to share it with Tom [Hannan]," Ferreira said.

Hannan, in addition to his record-helping break for Ferreira, scored on a 24-yard TD pass. John Haggart, another force in the game, carried 11 times for 153 yards.

Perhaps the game's biggest play was Ferreira's 79-yard pass to James Rupp, on an unusual play. Sayville coach Robert Hoss sent Tom Dieckhoff, wide receiver, in motion and faked the Harborfields defense to bite on him while Ferreira stood in the pocket as his offensive line covered his ground so he can clear a downfield pass to Rupp.

"It was a play we tried in practice, but never in a game," Ferreira said. "It worked out well."

Sirico scored again with 7:41 to go in the third quarter, his second touchdown of the game. Ferreira cleared a brilliant pass to Dieckhoff on their next drive that he fumbled. It was Sayville's only fumble of the game, but they would recover as Harborfields was unable to muster anything due to a great defensive play by lineback Patrick Waters.

Hannan's two touchdowns came next for the Golden Flashes, including the record breaker to put Sayville up 42-7 in the fourth quarter.

A surprisingly brilliant 60-yard pass to #21 Alec Grappa of the Tornadoes at 7:49 would bring forth something Sayville isn't used to, an opposing touchdown. Harborfields would cut Sayville's lead to 42-14.

Sayville will play No. 2 Westhampton at Stony Brook on November 20 at noon for the county title.
