Boys Volleyball Eliminated by No. 1 Eastport-South Manor

Top seeded Sharks dismiss Sayville in straight sets in semis

Though the boys' volleyball season ended Monday night at the hands of top-seeded Eastport-South Manor, there were still plenty of positives to take away from the season for the Golden Flashes.

"This was the most successful season that we've ever had. Four years ago I was basically recruiting kids out of the hallway," said Sayville head coach Anthony DeAngelis. "And in four years we turned into the second round of the playoffs. That's huge for our program. That's huge for Sayville."

Unfortunately for DeAngelis and the Golden Flashes, the Sharks (17-1, 14-0) had their way with Sayville, winning 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-14).

"We played a team who was undefeated, the number-one seed," DeAngelis said. "I just told my kids, you know, if we would've taken care of the teams we had to take care of in the season then we wouldn't be in this situation, but I was still proud of the way they played."

The Sharks got ahead early on Sayville (8-8, 7-7) and never looked back. Andrew Wysocki led all players with 14 kills for Eastport-South Manor. He also added three aces. Jon Anderson also had three aces to go along with his 11 kills. Ryan Brisson had 37 assists.

Wysocki had six kills in the first set as the Sharks went on to win 25-13.

Sayville, who was without a varsity team for a period until four years ago, showed resilience in the second game after falling behind 9-2 early. A roster led by all-County selection Tyler Nolan, got within three but that was as close as they would get, losing the second set by the same score.

Nolan was helped by fellow all-League selections Lionel Pomerantz and DJ Kelley, as well as junior Peter Rende. But as the game wore on, the Sharks' attack was just too much.

Eastport-South Manor advances to play Shoreham-Wading River in the County finals at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Longwood High School.
