Info and photo submitted by Vincent Ungaro

The girls of Bayport-Blue Point High School recently concluded the team portion of the spring track and field season.

With a convincing victory in the County Championship on May 21, the Lady Phantoms have put a stamp on a remarkable four years of competition. The senior girls on the team have not lost a league meet at all during their time in the high school and have won seven county championships as well!

Starting in the fall of the 2010-2011 school year, the Phantoms have gone on to win 44 straight dual meets in cross country and spring track and field.  Add to that four winter track and field league championships and the girls can truly claim they have had 12 straight undefeated league championship seasons.  Also during that time they have won two cross country class B County Championships, a winter County Championship this year and impressively just won their fourth straight spring County Championship.

At the County Championship, many of the girls on the team found ways to contribute points to a 146 total that was sixty three points ahead of the next closest team (Miller Place).  The team was led by perennial standout but recent star Kathleen Cibuls.  Kathleen has always been a great track and field athlete but during this county championship meet was thrust into the upper echelon of athletes in the state.

During the two days of competition Kathleen set three school records and two meet records winning the long jump (18’10.75’’), triple jump (38’0’’) and the 400 meter dash (56.29).  She also placed third in the hundred meter hurdles scoring a total of thirty six points out of a maximum forty.  Teammate Kerri Nickel also had a big meet winning the one hundred meter hurdles in a school record time of 15.30 and also placed second in both the high jump and four hundred meter hurdles.

Lauren Hansen won both the shot put and discus with teammate Jeami Van Weele placing second and third behind her respectively.  Stephanie Silver won the pole vault tying the highest jump in Suffolk County this season clearing ten feet and nine inches.  Annie Loretz was the county champ in the pentathlon while doing the event for the very first time.  It is truly impressive to have one team win eight out of the twenty contested events in the meet.

The remaining point scorers include Brigitte Strobl (400 IH, 4x1), Courtney Bofinger (Racewalk), Courtney Dooley (Steeplechase), Brianna Delzell (Steeplechase , 4x8), Lindsey McGovern (Pentathlon), Caroline Giunta (4x8), Maddy Fiorentine (4x8), Taylor Darby (4x8), Ashley Magnifico (4x1), Shelby Wertz (PV, 4x1), Dariya Dolan (Long Jump, 4x1).
