B-BP Girls Track Vies for League Title Next Week

The Phantoms now sit atop the League VII standings.

The Bayport-Blue Point Girls Track and Field team competed Wednesday against longtime rival Shoreham-Wading River and both teams came into the meet undefeated.

The Phantoms took the win and now sit atop the League VII standings.

The meet started out great for the BBP team as Kathleen Cibuls (ninth  grade), Dariya Dolan (eighth grade) and Annie Loretz (ninth grade) swept the triple jump with all girls jumped beyond 30 feet.

Next came Casey Hasher (senior) winning the 100-meter hurdles easily with teammate Kerri Nickel (eleventh grade) giving the team another point taking third.

As SWR has one of the best distance runners in Suffolk County the job of tiring her out fell at the feet of BBP senior Katie Saroka. Following her race plan perfectly, Saroka took the 1500-meter race out quicker than she ever has during her five-year tenure on the varsity team and led the race for 1495 meters before getting edged out at the line.

Had the Shoreham freshman waited to kick another two seconds, Saroka would have won the race.

Preventing the wildcats from gaining momentum was senior Sam Triani’s victory in the 400-meter dash followed closely by Ashley Magnifico (ninth grade) taking third.

The meet started to move decisively in BBP’s favor after Kathleen Cibuls, Casey Hasher and Stephanie Silver (eleventh grade) took first, second and third respectively in the 100-meter dash.

Senior Rachel Steinmuller kept her streak of league meet racewalk victories in tact for all of this season (which also dates back to 2011).  Emily LaPorta (eleventh grade) also set a big personal best taking third in the 1500-meter racewalk.

Eighth grader Dariya Dolan tied her personal record in the 200-meter dash and locked up first while Sam Triani came back after winning the 400-meter dash taking third in the 200.

If there was any doubt about the outcome of the meet, it was settled after Hasher, Rebecca Muschio (senior) and Brigitte Strobl (ninth grade) swept the 400-meter intermediate hurdles.

Sophomore Brianna Delzell and senior Nicole Mason took first and second respectively in the 3000-meter run while Dolan and Cibuls took first and second respectively in the long jump.

On the other side of the field the young throwing squad of Jeami Van Weele (tenth grader), Lauren Hansen (ninth grader), Haley Clancy (tenth grader), Shannon Gallo (ninth grader) and Alyssa Hall (ninth grader) scored eight more points for the Phantoms.

Junior Shelby Wertz cleared all heights on her first attempt until eight feet and six inches in the pole vault and took third place. Cibuls won the high jump and took a few jumps at school record height while Nickel tied for second place after clearing four feet and eight inches.

The meet ended with a clean sweep of all three relays. It was the toughest meet the BBP girls had faced this season and the girls more than rose to the occasion.

This was the Girls Cross Country and Track and Field teams’ 32nd consecutive dual meet win and the 17th straight spring dual win.

Next up is the last dual meet of the season for the league championship against Wyandanch next Wednesday at home.
