Bayport Woman Wins Runners Edge 5K Race

Leonora Petrina took first among the 500 females who pounded the pavement in the Farmingdale event.

Bayport resident Leonora Petrina took first place in the Runners Edge 5k race that drew 500 female runners and racewalkers on Saturday morning.

Racers came from around Long Island, competing in different categories. Laura Cummings of Bay Shore second and Heather Williams of Centerport third.

The top finishers from the Town of Oyster Bay were Shari Klarfeld of Plainview at No. 8 and Farmingdale's Elizabeth Waywell, in the ninth spot.

A field of 15 competed in the racewalking portion, led by U.S. Olympian Maria Michta, who finished the course in 24 minutes, 5.5 seconds. Saturday's race was her last before heading to the Olympics in London.

Runner’s Edge was chief sponsor, with the matrimonial law firm of Mejias, Milgrim, Alvarado serving as the presenting sponsor. Race management is by the Greater Long Island Running Club, with GLIRC’s Debbie Blair serving as the race director.
