Little League Wraps-up, Comes Close to Championship

Though they didn't make it to the New York state Championships, local Little Leaguers had reason to celebrate at the close of the season.

Bayport-Blue Point Little League's 10 to 11-year-old Williamsport tournament team won the District 35 Championship. The team was comprised of all the same members as last season, which is unusual, coach Lou Liberatore said.

The team won the first two games of the sectional, and was among the final four in the running to go to the New York state championship. But they were beaten by Massapequa and then Plainview.

"We weren't used to losing, but I think they had a pretty good perspective on things," Liberatore said, "With Plainview, we ran into a very good team on top of their game, a little more so than us, so we want to figure out what happened and not make that mistake again."

Separately, the 11-year-old Bayport-Blue Point District 35 Islip in-house tournament team won the 2010 Championship.

In-house team coach, Bob Draffin, said the team won five out of six games and then won the District 35 Islip in-house tournament, battling Sayville for the championship title and winning.

Draffin spoke to the success of this year's little leaguers despite the fact that the Bayport-Blue Point community is such a small one, "There's something to be said for how well our little community does," he said.
