B-BP Kids Participate in Sixth Annual Kickball Tournament

New Land Christian Center of Blue Point organized the event to promote healthy habits and camaraderie.

Dozens of children gathered on the athletic fields of Blue Point Elementary School Saturday to play in the 6th annual Kickball Event.

Open to all children ages 11 through 16, the friendly game was organized by the New Land Christian Center of Blue Point to promote healthy habits and camaraderie.

"We do this every year because we just want them to know that they have a purpose and a plan in life. We want to promote common unity within the community. We try to encourage them to care about and support one another," a spokesperson for the organization said.

Dorothy Keller agreed that this was a great way for the kids to have some fun. She is a member of the Center and has volunteered to help at the event since its inception.

"When this started six years ago, the vision was to bring kids together and to have a safe place. They get to know and meet each other outside of school circumstances. Being a single mom, it's a great place to be. I have two kids here today and they love it," Keller said.

Darin Mihalik from Patchogue-Medford stepped in as coach for this year's games.

"I was called in this morning to coach and I thought it was a great idea so I came down to support the Bayport-Blue Point community. It has been a lot of fun. It's the perfect mix of competition and fun," Mihalik said.

During a break before lunch, Coach Chris White spoke to the participants about staying healthy and dealing with the everyday stresses of life.

"We want to let each of you know that you're important. A lot of times, adults get caught up in the everyday business cycle. Life is tough but we want to give back to the community and to the kids," White said.
