A Season to Remember For Sayville

A look back at the Sayville High School football season.

Although they fell short of the Long Island championship, the Flashes football season was still "Golden." The Sayville varsity football season was still one to remember as the Golden Flashes captured the Suffolk County Division III championship and were within one quarter of winning the Long Island championship. 

Here is a look at the top 10 moments from the 2010 Sayville Golden Flashes varsity football season:

#10 - Matson's Blocked Punt in Championship Game

In the third quarter of the against Lynbrook, with Sayville trailing 26-20, Mike Matson blocked the Lynbrook punt, giving the Golden Flashes first and goal on the Lynbrook 5-yard line. Although Sayville failed to score, it did set them up for good field position, enabling the Golden Flashes to take a 27-26 lead on the first play of the fourth quarter. 

#9 – The Loss to Islip

On Oct. 16,. Both teams were 5-0 at the time, but Islip dominated the game, winning 41-13. Normally, a loss wouldn't be considered a highlight of the season. But Sayville head coach Robert Hoss said the loss enabled Sayville to become a better team. The Golden Flashes got revenge in the county finals. 

#8 - DeLuca Scores – On Offense

In the last regular season of the game, . One memorable play occurred early in the game. All-County defensive tackle Joe DeLuca was inserted in the game as tight end and scored Sayville's second touchdown of the game on a 40-yard pass from quarterback Steven Ferreira.

#7 - Ferreira Starts Off With the Hot Hand

In Sayville's first two games of the season, on Sept. 11 and a on Sept. 16, All-County quarterback Steven Ferreira got off to a hot start, throwing seven touchdown passes in the two games to four different receivers – James Rupp, Thomas Hannan, Rich Millwater and Josh Tordik. 

#6 - The Bomb to Hannan

On Oct. 2, in a , Ferreira found wide receiver Thomas Hannan for a 70-yard touchdown pass. Sayville had fallen behind 14-0 early in the game but the play put Sayville up for good as the Golden Flashes scored 28 second quarter points. 

#5 - The Homecoming Thriller

On Oct. 23, Sayville hosted Westhampton for homecoming but the Golden Flashes found themselves trailing 14-7 in the fourth quarter. However, Haggart scored from six yards out with 1:03 to play, sending the game into overtime. In the third round of the overtime, Haggart ended the game with a 20-yard touchdown run to give . 

#4 - Tordik Takes it the Distance

On Nov. 13, in the Suffolk County Division III semifinals against Westhampton, with Sayville leading by a touchdown in the fourth quarter, defensive back Josh Tordik intercepted the ball and ran it all the way back 67 yards for a touchdown, sealing the.

#3 – The Stand

In that same playoff game against Westhampton, with the game tied 14-14 in the third quarter, Westhampton had the ball first and goal on the Sayville 4-yard line. But the Golden Flashes defense came up big, stopping Westhampton, which turned the ball over on downs.

#2 - Rupp and Haggart Help Win Suffolk Title

On Nov. 18, Sayville met arch-rival Islip in the . In the third overtime, with the score tied 20-20, defensive back James Rupp intercepted Islip quarterback Jeffrey Craig in the endzone. On Sayville ensuing possession, running back John Haggart scored on a two-yard run to win the county title for the Golden Flashes.

And the number one moment of the season is...

#1 - Ferreira to Millwater

On Nov. 6, in the Suffolk County Division III quarterfinals. With Amityville leading 21-20 and on the verge of an upset, Steven Fereirra hit wide receiver Rich Millwater over the middle for a 36-yard touchdown pass with 25.8 seconds left to send Sayville into the next round of the playoffs en route to their county title.
