Viewfinder: B-BP Students Innovate and Donate

Members of Bayport-Blue Point schools National Honor Society and PIE program learn through hands-on experience.

B-BP is home to young inventors

The Long Island Science Center visited the Bayport-Blue Point Program for Instructional Enrichment (PIE) to facilitate the Action Contraption workshop. Based on the works of Rube Goldberg, a cartoonist and inventor who is known for his designs of complex devices that perform simple tasks in indirect ways, students worked in teams to brainstorm and design a machine or contraption.

This challenging, hands-on experience required students to make a marble drop into a cup by utilizing common materials such as cardboard boxes, wooden Popsicle sticks, metal washers, yarn, paper clips and rubber bands to complete the action.

NHS coordinates Homeless Hygiene Project

The  National Honor Society is comprised of academically talented students who have demonstrated their strong connection to greater Long Island through their community service project.

In conjunction with the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, National Honor Society members are working to bring hygiene products to these needy individuals.

The club set up collection stations in homerooms throughout the school and encouraged their peers to donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soaps and combs. Following the drive, Honor Society students worked together to sort the items and create individual personal care packages.

Inspired by the efforts of Bayport-Blue Point students, the local stocked their shelves with travel size items at discounted prices. In addition, area doctors and dentists contributed sample merchandise for the drive.
