Sylvan PTA Brings Holiday Shopping to the Kids

Bayport-Blue Point holiday fair at Sylvan Ave. Elementary School gets students into the spirit of giving.

It's the season for shopping, and at , the PTA brings the store to the children.

For two days in December, a classroom was transformed into a holiday fair.

Tables were full of all the items any child would want to buy for their family - 'world's greatest dad' hats, nana magnets, '#1 uncle' key chains, and 'best sister' pens. The mom section was full of sparkly necklaces and rings.

First grader Erin McMahon said her favorite parts of the holidays are buying gifts for others and playing Santa for her family.

"I love it! I am buying presents for my mom, dad, sister, grandma and grandpa," she said.

The holiday fair could not happen without the parent volunteers who help the shoppers make their big decisions. Denise Messina has three girls in Sylvan and it was her first time volunteering at the holiday fair.

"My girls were so pumped about this last night," she said. "Every year they get their money together, put it in the envelope and check off who they are buying for. It is a lot of fun!"

It was Jodi Cunnius's fifth year chairing the holiday fair. "It is a fun event and all the kids look forward to it every year."  The shopping day raises a little bit of money for the PTA, but it is really for the kids to get in the holiday spirit."
