UPDATED: Should Schools Cancel Winter Break?

Given lost class time districts may cancel the February break. Do you agree with that decision?

The super storm Sandy that hit in late October played havoc with school districts and student class time given the large number of days many districts were forced to be closed.

Many Long Island districts are opting to cancel the annual February winter break to catch up on lost classroom time.

In Sayville the decision will be made at the December 6 board meeting. Bayport-Blue Point's interim superintendent is recommending using four of the vacation days and it's likely the board of education will make a decision at its December 4 meeting.

No way! Winter break should not be cancelled. It is not the fault of anyone but Mother Nature that the kids were out of school. The days they were out were most likely filled with stress, no power, and possibly cleaning up their homes or relocating. We have highly skilled teachers in Sayville, and intelligent students. Between the 2, I am sure they are mostly caught up by now. I say just let it be....let all have their vacations.

It was a natural disaster. I don't understand why the state government hasn't stepped in and pardoned the required 180 days for that reason.

I think it should be cancelled...Wouldnt you rather give up a week in the middle of winter than extra time in June? Kids need that extra week in school! Way to much time off from school if you add that missed week on to ALL the other recesses! Ridiculous...I say cancel February break!

If they have to make up the days I'd rather them make them up in February than in June. School ends late enough as it is. I agree with Brienne in that the state should pardon the days. So many school districts lost days with the storm, it's not just a handful that have to make up days.

Continue with the break...if necessary, make it up at the end of the year. Better yet, the districts should be closely monitoring what goes on during regular school days. IMO, 4-5 days of instruction could easily be made up by not watching movies during instruction time. Three different hs academic classes watched movies the first few days of school AND during the year!! Last week my kid quoted the teacher saying, "When in Doubt, pull Nemo out!" Really??!!! There are far better methods to instruct Marine Bio!
